Lectures
I.H. Cohn, M.D. Fund
Established in 2004 by Thomas and Sally Cohn to honor Mr. Cohn’s father, Isadore H. Cohn, MD. Dr. Cohn was one of the innovators of adolescent and group psychotherapy in New York. The fund will support an annual lecture for the general public, presented by a member of the Institute faculty on a timely topic in the field of psychoanalytic study and treatment.
Paul A. Dewald, M.D. Fund
Established by Dr. Dewald’s family to honor his long-standing interest in education and his contributions to the Institute. Friends and colleagues have contributed significantly to the fund. The money is earmarked to support special educational events or projects related to the application of psychoanalytic concepts to issues of interest to lay and professional groups. In 1995, the Board designated this fund to support the first Paul A. Dewald, M.D. Community Lecture.
Hyman H. Fingert, M.D. Memorial Fund
Established in 2000 by Judith F. Chused, M.D. and Patricia Fingert to honor Hyman H. Fingert, M.D., one of the founding members of the Institute. Donations are earmarked for an annual presentation to the analytic community on the technique and process of psychoanalytic treatment and the relationship between patient and analyst.
Programs
Beatrice Edison Fund
Established in 1988 by the Harry Edison Fund at the recommendation of Irving Edison. This Board designated fund is to be “primarily used in the child and adolescent field for treatment services, training, and community education programs.”
Ilene Edison APP Teacher of the Year Award
Established in 1994 by a gift from the Sydney & Sadie Cohen Foundation and designated by the Board and Faculty of the Institute to honor an outstanding teacher in our Advanced Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program. The prize carries an honorarium, an award, and the recipients name inscribed on a plaque in the Betty Golde Smith Library.
Alex H. Kaplan, M.D. Fund
Established by the Institute Board in 1993 in honor of Alex H. Kaplan, M.D.’s fifty years of accomplishment in psychoanalysis and psychiatry, and his contributions to the St. Louis mental health community. The purpose of the fund is to provide “seed” money to promote the development of, ensure the affordability of, and broaden the number of professionals in training at the Institute by underwriting the start-up costs, covering program deficits and providing financial aid to students in need.
Scholarships, Grants, Student Loans
Eric J. Nuetzel, M.D. Fund
Initiated in the summer of 2006, with a lead gift from Mitchell and Joan Markow, to support the analytic training of one full time academic per year in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis. Such individuals use their analytic training to inform and advance their own research interests bringing psychoanalysis into universities, and university faculty into psychoanalysis, thereby enriching the intellectual environment of STLPI while advancing human knowledge. The recipient will be known as the Nuetzel scholar.
Sommer Visiting Instructor and Speaker Fund
Established in the spring of 2007, with a generous gift from Charles (Sandy) and Janie Sommer to complement, strengthen and diversify instruction in the Child Analytic Training Program. The fund will underwrite presentations by outstanding and nationally recognized child analysts visiting from Institutes across the country. The instruction will benefit psychoanalysts in the St. Louis area, stimulate new ideas for faculty scholarship, and enhance the intellectual life of the Institute.
Schiele Loan Fund
The Herbert S. Schiele Loan Fund was established to provide low interest loans to qualified candidates to help them defray the cost of psychoanalytic training.
